Her Story

From office worker to dance educator — how Siobhan found her calling.

Siobhan's journey into dance education began in her early thirties when she took her first salsa class in Dublin. It wasn't planned — she was looking for a way to stay active after years sitting at a desk. But that first class changed everything. The music, the movement, the genuine friendliness of the other dancers — it awakened something she didn't know she'd been missing.

Discovering the transformative impact dance had on her own health and social confidence, she pursued formal training at the Irish College of Dance in Cork. She earned her Level 3 Dance Instruction Certification in 2012, and then kept going. Additional qualifications in senior fitness coaching followed. The more she trained, the clearer it became — she wanted to teach people like the person she'd been. Older beginners. People intimidated by traditional dance studios. People who thought they were too late to start.

Over the past 14 years, she's built a reputation for creating welcoming, non-judgmental dance environments. In 2018, she opened her first dedicated beginner-friendly studio in Waterford. A satellite location in Kilkenny followed two years later. She's taught over 800 mature students the fundamentals of bachata and salsa. And she's seen the same transformation happen again and again — people discovering that age isn't a barrier. It's just a starting point.

Now at lookfit Limited, Siobhan combines her practical teaching experience with evidence-based health research. She writes to answer the real questions mature adults have about dance — how to get started, what to expect, whether their body can handle it, how to choose a good school. Her work is driven by a simple conviction: learning to dance shouldn't feel risky or embarrassing. It should feel possible.

Teaching Philosophy

The principles that guide her work with students and her writing for lookfit

Age Isn't a Barrier

She's watched 60-year-olds pick up bachata in eight weeks. Seen 70-year-olds get stronger and more confident than they've been in decades. The narrative that you're "too old to learn" is false. What you need is a good teacher, realistic expectations, and patience. That's it.

Progression Matters More Than Speed

She doesn't rush students. There's no benefit to learning complicated moves if your fundamentals aren't solid. Instead, she builds step by step. Footwork first. Then rhythm. Then partnering. Each piece connects to the last. This approach prevents injury and creates lasting confidence.

Community Changes Everything

The health benefits of dance aren't just physical. They're social. Psychological. She's seen people come out of isolation, rebuild their social circles, and discover joy again through dance. That transformation happens in welcoming, inclusive environments — not competitive ones.

Transparency & Authenticity

When she writes, she's honest. Dance isn't a cure-all. You'll probably feel awkward at first. Some days your knees will hurt. But she'll also tell you what's actually possible, what the research shows, and how to find good instruction. No hype. Just truth.
